Burnham Institute Institute received a two-year planning grant from the NCI that helped the Institute relocate

In 1979, the Burnham Institute received a two-year planning grant from the National Cancer Institute that helped the Institute relocate on five acres donated by the Whittaker Corporation in Torrey Pines in close proximity to the University of Southern California at San Diego and the Salk Institute. In 1981, the Institute was designated as a Cancer Center for Basic Research by the National Cancer Institute.
