In 1999, Sygen Company began commercializing genetic markers developed at Iowa State University (ISU) for producing leaner animals and improving meat quality. A number of important genetic markers for pigs have been discovered by ISU researchers that are used to identify leaner breeding animals, those with the ability to produce larger litters and other commercially important traits to the entire swine industry.
