In 1993, The Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at San Antonio received National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation.

This designation recognizes the center’s scientific leadership in laboratory and clinical research, as well as its commitment to training and educating biomedical researchers and healthcare professionals. The Cancer Therapy & Research Center is one of four NCI-designated cancer centers in Texas.

The Mays Cancer Center’s Institute for Drug Development (IDD) was founded in 1991 as the research arm of what was then called the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC).
