The first significant outbreaks of ZIKV infection involving more than a few persons were detected

In 2013, the Zika virus reached French Polynesia, probably introduced from somewhere in the Southeast Asia area rather than from Yap, followed by spread to several other islands in Oceania including New Caledonia, the Cook Islands, and Easter Island. The French Polynesian outbreak was estimated to have affected approximately 28,000 persons or approximately 11% of the population.
