In 1988, Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies was founded as a 501(c)(3) research center dedicated to conducting basic research to advance the understanding of human disease and the improvement of human health.

In 2020, The Florida Board of Governors approved Florida International University’s merger with Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies.
