Colossal Targets Moa as Its Next Species Restoration Milestone
On Jul. 8, 2025, Colossal Biosciences announced the moa as its next de-extinction focus, continuing its mission to restore species lost to human impact. Native to New Zealand and once among the largest birds in the world, the moa was driven to extinction centuries ago.
Now, in partnership with the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre, Colossal is developing full genome assemblies from ancient remains to bring the moa back to life. This project blends frontier science with Indigenous wisdom, offering a model for rewilding ecosystems and reclaiming lost biodiversity.
As Colossal refines its core technologies, each new project accelerates breakthroughs in conservation, species revival, and ecosystem health. The moa’s return is not just a scientific goal—it is a powerful symbol of what is possible when innovation and stewardship move forward together.
