On Apr. 1, 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that it had expanded the HIV definition to include any detectable viral load assay completed since 01/01/00.

HIV ribonucleic acid (RNA) viral load reporting is critical in monitoring patients’ progression toward AIDS and response to HAART.

The expanded HIV definition also was made reportable in Texas.
