Paul B. Dunbar, PhD, became Commissioner of Food and Drugs

On May. 1, 1944, Paul B. Dunbar, Ph.D., becomes Commissioner of Food and Drugs. His tenure as commissioner included launching the era of the “miracle drugs.” Sale of dangerous drugs without prescription became a major issue during his administration.

He was one of the first to predict the need for a narcotic-type control over drugs such as barbiturates and amphetamines, which became law in 1965.
