On Jun. 25, 2020, the Allen Institute announced a new a new $40.5 million collaborative research center in Seattle to build high-resolution maps of Alzheimer’s patients’ brains and identify how their neurons and other brain cells differ from those of healthy people.

The center is funded over five years by the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health and is headquartered at the Allen Institute, with additional projects based at UW Medicine and Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute.

The new research center will also adapt brain-banking methods to allow the application of modern single-cell technologies to postmortem brains. This will provide samples ready for the analyses in this project and generate a brain tissue repository that can be used for future single-cell studies.
