On Jan. 1, 1881, the Eastman Dry Plate Company (Eastman Kodak) was founded in Rochester, New York, by George Eastman and Henry A. Strong to develop the hand-held camera.

In 2012, Kodak announced that it had filed for bankruptcy protection. The Chapter 11 filing made Kodak one of the largest corporate casualties of the digital age, after it failed to embrace more modern technologies such as the digital camera, a product it introduced in 1975.
