In 1937, Henry Klein, Carroll E. Palmer, John W. Knutson devised a Decayed Missing Filled (DMF) Index guide that became the standard epidemiological tool for studies and surveys of children’s dental status.

The DMF index is well established as the leading measure of caries experience in dental epidemiology. While there have been calls for the DMF index to be replaced, it remains the most commonly used epidemiological index for assessing dental caries.
